The Gold-Threaded Robe
2004
Do not treasure the gold-threaded robe
But treasure your youth
You should pick flowers while blooming
And don’t wait until wilted with only calyx to pick
— The Gold-Threaded Robe, Tang Poem
In 2004, Lin Chuan-Chu’s mother passed away after suffering from Parkinson’s disease. Through reading Buddhist texts and accompanying her through the final stage of her life, he began to reflect more directly on the body, death, and time. The cycles of life, material dissolution, and mortality gradually entered his artistic practice.
That same year, Lin undertook a residency in Kenya. Local burial customs, in which graves are left without tombstones, together with ancient legends surrounding Zheng He’s maritime expeditions, led to the creation of the performance photography work The Gold-Threaded Robe.
