母土 Mother Earth
2006
Mother Earth continues Lin Chuan-Chu’s Family Stories series, which began in 2002, and was created in memory of his mother, Yang Rong (1925–2004). The work uses grain as a metaphor for time: kernels fall from above and gradually accumulate, while on the opposite side they are shown being scattered by the wind. Through this movement between accumulation and disappearance, the work responds to his mother’s death and evokes the farmer’s long experience of seasons, harvests, and the passage of time.
From childhood and family memories that resurfaced during his years in the United States to his renewed encounter with his hometown, parents, and rural life after returning to Taiwan, Lin transformed personal experience into a broader reflection on land, time, and material disappearance.
